About the church

On Kirkonmäki stands the medieval stone church of Kaarlela, the oldest parts of which date back to the 1460s. At the end of the 18th century, it was rebuilt into a cruciform church based on plans approved by Swedish King Gustav III. The reconstruction was overseen by Vicar Anders Chydenius, a key figure in the development of democratic ideals in Finland and Sweden. His portrait hangs on the wall next to the pulpit, which is one of the oldest in Finland. Kaarlela Parish Church also serves as a road church during the month of July.
The church can also be reserved for baptisms, weddings or funerals.
